THE HISTORY OF PAYNE

1914 - From humble beginnings in a converted barn in Los Angeles, D.W.  Payne and his sons began building gravity-type furnaces for the growing California housing market.  Payne's talent for development became apparent when the company offered the first floor furnace that could be installed in a conventional crawl space.  This was a major development since many western homes did not have a basement.

By 1926 the company was housed in a modern headquarters and manufacturing facility.

1933 - More new developments.  Payne introduced the first forced-air, down-discharged furnace.  They were also the first to market a forced-air furnace approved for closet installation.

In 1939, Earl Carroll's Hollywood Cafe and Theatre was the place to see and been seen.  Payne supplied the furnaces for the heating and ventilation system that kept Tinseltown's movers and shakers comfortable.

During the 1940's, Payne was the choice of the stars and had such famous clients as Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Judy Garland and Shirley Temple.  Payne capitalized on this notoriety in promotional materials.  On into the 1950's, Payne pioneered perimeter and zone heating, an important introduction during the post World War II housing boom.  Payne's product line expanded with the addition or remote air conditioning products.

Today - Payne supplies a family of air conditioners, heat pumps, indoor coils, thermostats, gas furnaces, oil furnaces and related products.  Our customers are contractors, dealers and, ultimately, homeowners who want dependable heating and cooling systems at a reasonable price.
